Category 1: Odds Quality (30%)

Odds quality is the most important factor for any serious bettor and receives the highest weighting. We measure it in three ways:

  • Margin benchmarking: We calculate the bookmaker's margin on the same set of markets (Premier League 1X2, ATP tennis match winner, NFL game total) across at least 50 events and compare against Pinnacle's closing line as the sharp-market benchmark.
  • Closing line value: How often does the book's opening line move toward or away from the closing line? Books that are routinely beaten by line movement are pricing inefficiently.
  • Account restriction policy: Books that systematically restrict winning accounts receive a penalty to their odds quality score — odds are irrelevant if you cannot bet at them.
Odds quality scoreTypical margin (PL 1X2)Account restriction policy
9.5 – 10.0Under 3%Accepts winners
8.5 – 9.43 – 5%Light restrictions
7.0 – 8.45 – 7%Moderate restrictions
Below 7.0Over 7%Aggressive restrictions

Category 2: Market Depth (25%)

We count the number of available markets on a standard Premier League fixture and a standard ATP tennis match, assess coverage of lower-league football (below top 5 European leagues), and check availability of in-play markets, Asian handicap, player props, and outright/futures markets.

  • 50+ football markets per game: full marks
  • Coverage of at least 60 football countries pre-match
  • In-play markets on all major sports
  • Player props for NBA, NFL, and ATP tennis

Category 3: Payments (20%)

We test or verify the following for each bookmaker:

  • Deposit methods available (cards, e-wallets, bank transfer, crypto)
  • Withdrawal processing time (tested with e-wallet method where possible)
  • Minimum deposit and withdrawal thresholds
  • Verification requirements and speed of the KYC process
  • Currency support for non-UK/EUR bettors

Category 4: Trust & Licensing (15%)

  • Regulatory licences: UKGC, MGA, Gibraltar, Curaçao — in that order of prestige. Multi-jurisdiction licences score higher.
  • Corporate transparency: Publicly listed companies (Entain, Flutter, 888 Holdings, Kindred) receive higher trust scores due to regulatory filings and public accountability.
  • Account restriction transparency: Are restriction criteria published? Are customers informed when limited? Books with opaque restriction policies receive a trust penalty.
  • Responsible gambling tools: Deposit limits, self-exclusion, cool-off — scored on completeness and ease of access.

Category 5: Promotions (10%)

Promotions receive the lowest weighting because they are the most volatile factor — welcome offers change frequently, ongoing promotions vary by market, and bonus value depends heavily on individual betting patterns. We assess:

  • Wagering requirement multiplier on welcome bonus (lower = better)
  • Minimum odds requirement on bonus bets
  • Time limit to clear the bonus
  • Ongoing promotion quality (reload offers, acca insurance, early payout)

Final Score Calculation

Each category is scored 1–10 by our editorial team based on the criteria above. The overall score is the weighted average:

Score = (Odds×0.30) + (Markets×0.25) + (Payments×0.20) + (Trust×0.15) + (Promos×0.10)

Scores are rounded to one decimal place and reviewed annually, or sooner if a bookmaker makes a significant policy change. All scores carry the date of last update.

Independence & Commercial Relationships

OddsAcademy earns revenue through affiliate commissions when readers sign up to bookmakers via our links. This commercial relationship does not influence scores or rankings. Our editorial process is:

  • Scores are set before any affiliate agreement is in place for that bookmaker
  • All bookmakers are scored using the same criteria regardless of commercial relationship
  • We include bookmakers we do not have affiliate relationships with (e.g. Pinnacle) where they represent the best option for a use case
  • Commercial disclosure appears on all bookmaker review pages

See our About page for further detail on editorial independence and team credentials.
